Beavers Eighth In Stanford
April 9, 2005
STANFORD, Calif.- - After round one Saturday of the Peg Barnard Invitational, the Oregon State women's golf team sits in eighth place with a team total of 313.
Freshman Julie Uhrik fired the low round on the day for the Beavers with a 3-over 74, good enough to place her tied for 11th with one round to play.
Freshman Jessi Gebhardt also cracked the top 20 with a 5-over 76, tying her for 19th.
'Julie played really well today with the exception of her first hole (double bogey),' said Coach Risë Lakowske, 'and Jessi hit 15 greens, but had 37 putts.
'It wasn't a bad day, but it's a learning process on this course since it's only the second time the freshmen have played it.'
Washington sits atop the team leaderboard with a 3-over 287, a full eight strokes ahead of second-place Washington State.
Defending champion Kim Welch led the Cougars and the entire field Saturday with a 5-under 66 and will take a four-stroke lead over the Huskies' Kim Shin into the final round on Sunday.
Sophomore Jill Ferrante withdrew due to an injury on her left hand.
'The rough is up and the course is playing difficult,' added Lakowske.
'Hopefully Jill will be able to play tomorrow and we'll be good to go.'
The final round begins Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. with a shotgun start.
