Bruins Drop Series Opener to Crosstown Rival USC

April 8, 2005

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Junior first baseman Brett McMillan's solo home run in the top of the seventh inning provided the lone bright spot for UCLA as the Bruins dropped game one of this weekend's Pac-10 baseball series to USC, 11-1 Friday night at Dedeaux Field. Trojan southpaw Jack Spradlin earned the win for Southern California, tossing an impressive eight innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six.

USC (19-9, 4-3 Pac-10) jumped out to an early lead against UCLA starter Brian Schroeder with four runs in the second inning. Battling a tight strike zone, Schroeder walked the first two batters of the inning before surrendering an RBI single to first baseman Matt Cusick. After a bunt single by Darin Viera loaded the bases with one out, Blake Sharpe drilled Schroeder's 3-2 pitch into the left field corner, scoring all three runs and giving the Trojans a 4-0 lead.

Schroeder would settle down after that and would go on to strike out the side in the third and ultimately retire eight of the final nine batters he faced. Right-hander Daniel Miltenberger took over in the bottom of the sixth for UCLA. Schroeder allowed four runs on five hits while walking and striking out four.

Miltenberger retired the first two batters he faced in the sixth, but then allowed a two-out walk to Cusick before Viera chipped in with his second home run of the year for a 6-0 Trojan advantage.

McMillan stroked his fifth round-tripper of the year with two outs in the UCLA seventh to bring the Bruins to within five.

But the Trojans would add five more runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by catcher Jeff Clement's three-run home run, his seventh of the year.

Spradlin improves to 3-1 with the victory and UCLA's Schroeder falls to 1-3 after suffering the defeat.

UCLA (7-19, 0-4 Pac-10) turned a season-high three double plays in thelosing effort.
