Cal Baseball Splits Doubleheader with No. 24 Arizona State

BERKELEY, CA - Led by the solid pitching of Adam Gold and the hitting of Errecart, Boesch, Craig and Holder, the California baseball team captured the second game of a doubleheader, 7-3, over No. 24-ranked Arizona State Saturday over at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears fell to the Sun Devils in the first game, 11-7, and are now 22-13 overall and 4-4 in the Pac-10. ASU goes to 22-14 overall and 3-2 in league play.

Gold was impressive in game two, throwing 7.3 innings with eight hits, three runs, two walks and four strikeouts to snap the Sun Devil's six-game winning streak. The Bears jumped out to the lead on a first inning home run by sophomore right fielder Chris Errecart off of ASU starter Pat Bresnehan (3-3, 5.7 innings, 10 hits, six runs, five earned runs, three walks, four strikeouts). The Sun Devils tied it with a run in the second on a RBI single by Seth Dhaenens, but Cal went on to score at least one run in five of the next seven innings. Senior Matt Einspahr had an RBI single in the second, senior designated hitter James Holder had a RBI single in the third, sophomore center fielder Brennan Boesch stole third and scored on catcher Tuffy Goeswisch's throwing error in the fifth inning. In the sixth, the Bears scored on RBI singles by Errecart and Boesch, and Craig hit a solo home run in the seventh.

Senior right-hander Matt Swanson threw well in relief in game two, pitching the final 1.7 innings with two hits, no runs, no walks and two strikeouts. Errecart, Boesch and Holder had three hits apiece for Cal, and Einspahr and Craig finished with two hits each.

In the first game, senior right-hander Eric Dworkis took the loss for the Bears (3-4, 4.0 innings, 10 hits, six runs, three walks, two strikeouts). ASU scored four runs in the second inning on a RBI single by Rocky Laguna, a RBI double by Travis Buck and a two-run double by Gosewisch. Cal came back with two runs in the second on freshman Josh Satins' lead-off home run and a RBI ground out by Holder. In the third, Craig had a two-run single to tie the game, 4-4.

However, ASU took control of the first contest by scoring three runs in the fifth on a lead-off homer by Joey Hooft and RBI singles by Buck and Gosewisch. The Sun Devils added two runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Joe Persichina and a RBI single by J.J. Sferra, and two more runs in the seventh on a wild pitch by Jeremy Burchett and a throwing error by Cal catcher Garrett Bussiere. The Bears made the final score 11-7 when Bussiere hit a two-run homer off eventual ASU winner Brett Bordes (3-3, 3.3 innings, three hits, two runs, one walk) in the eighth inning, and Holder had an RBI single in the botton of the ninth.

Cal will next host Arizona State in third game of the three-game Pac-10 series, Sunday, Apr. 10 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
