Friedman's Game-Winner Leads No. 3 Cal past No. 12 UCLA

April 9, 2005

BERKELEY - Junior Emily Friedman hit a two-out line drive to plate senior Chelsea Spencer in the bottom of the seventh, as the No. 3 California softball team defeated No. 12 UCLA, 2-1, in front of a capacity crowd at Levine-Fricke Field Saturday.

It was just the second regular-season victory by the Bears against the Bruins since 1998 and Friedman's game-winner might not have been possible without some breaks by the UCLA defense. With Spencer on second base and two down, Bruins starter Anjelica Selden (11-6) walked catcher Haley Woods intentionally. A wild pitch by Selden advanced Spencer to third and Woods to second and set the stage for Friedman's only hit of the afternoon.

UCLA (19-12, 1-4 Pac-10) tied the game in the sixth inning as catcher Emily Zaplatosch's two-out single scored center fielder Tara Henry from second. Cal starter Kelly Anderson (19-1), who had held the Bruins to three hits through the first five innings, got into trouble again in the seventh. The senior loaded the bases with one out before getting pinch hitter Jen Schroeder to pop up and third baseman Andrea Duran to fly out.

The Bears (35-4, 4-1 Pac-10) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a chopper from right fielder Alex Sutton that scored pinch runner Erika Racklin from third. Racklin was a substitute for Woods, who led off the inning with a base hit. Friedman then reached on an error by Bruins' second baseman Caitlin Benyi as the speedy Racklin raced to third.

Both teams squandered numerous chances to score. Cal stranded 11 runners - including leaving the bases loaded in the fifth - while UCLA left eight runners on base.

Cal wraps up a five-game homestand Sunday against the Bruins. Action at Levine-Fricke Field begins at 1 p.m.
