Michelle Smith Knocks In Four As No. 8 Stanford Defeats No. 20 Washington 6-3

Stanford, Calif. - Freshman Michelle Smith went 2-for-3 with four RBI to lead the eighth-ranked Stanford softball team to a 6-3 conference win over No. 20 Washington this afternoon at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal improve to 27-7, 2-2 in the Pac-10 while the Huskies drop to 19-13 overall, 1-4 in league play.
Stanford got on the board in the bottom of the first inning as Catalina Morris led off with a single, followed by a walk to Lauren Lappin. Michelle Smith then knocked a double to score Morris. Nelson also drew a walk to load the bases for Meaghan Sickler, who doubled home Lappin and Smith.
Washington tied the game up in the top of the fourth when Caitlin Noble hit a three-run homerun to left centerfield.
The Cardinal scored three more in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead on a three-run homerun to leftfield by Michelle Smith (her 11th of the year) that scored Morris and Lappin.
Freshman hurler Becky McCullough (9-1) picked up the win in the circle for the Cardinal, scattering five hits and three runs over seven innings of work with three strikeouts. Reliever Caitlin Noble (7-5) took the loss for the Huskies, allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts over six innings.
Caitlin Noble led Washington with a 1-for-2 effort with three RBI and one run scored.
Stanford and Washington are back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium to wrap up weekend conference play.
