Softball Drops 2-1 Decision to Cal
April 9, 2005
BERKELEY, Calif. - The Bruins rallied to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning, but the Golden Bears came back to earn a 2-1 win over UCLA on Saturday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field in Berkeley, Calif. With the loss, UCLA falls to 19-10 (0-4 Pac-10) while Cal improves to 35-4, 4-1 Pac-10.
The game started as a pitching duel between Cal's Kelly Anderson and UCLA's Anjelica Selden with neither team advancing a runner past second base until the third inning. In the fourth, the Golden Bears were able to push across a run on a leadoff single from Haley Woods, a sacrifice bunt that turned into an infield error that gave Cal runners on the corners and a fielders choice by Alex Sutton that allowed pinch-runner Erika Racklin to score the first run of the game.
Cal would load the bases in the fifth inning, but was unable to push an insurance run across the plate.
In the top of the sixth, Caitlin Benyi led off with a single to left field, but was out on a fielders choice by Tara Henry. Henry went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Andrea Duran before Jodie Legaspi walked to give the Bruins runners on first and second with two outs. Emily Zaplatosch then connected on a single to left center, scoring Henry to tie the game.
After Selden retired Cal in order in the bottom of the sixth, UCLA threatened to take the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Krista Colburn completed a 3-for-3 afternoon with a one-out double to left and went to third on an infield error on Ashley Herrera's at-bat, giving UCLA runners on the corners. A walk to Caitlin Benyi loaded the bases with one out, but UCLA was unable to push the go-ahead run across the plate.
In the bottom of the seventh, Chelsea Spencer led off with a single and advanced to second on a ground-out by Kaleo Eldredge. After Jessica Pamanian flied out for the second out of the inning, the Bruins issued an intentional walk, the second of the game, to Cal's Haley Woods, but junior designated player Emily Friedman connected on a fly ball to left that dropped despite a diving attempt by Bruin left fielder Herrera, allowing Spencer to score the game-winning run.
The Bruins and Golden Bears will complete the weekend series on Sunday afternoon with a scheduled 1 pm first pitch.
