Huskies Drop To Stanford, 4-3
April 10, 2005
STANFORD, Calif.-- No. 20 Washington could not overcome a three-run first inning by 8th-ranked Stanford and dropped a 4-3 contest at Boyd and Jill Family Stadium in front of 423 fans this afternoon. The loss dips Washington to 19-14 overall and 1-5 in the Pac-10, while Stanford improves to 28-7 and 3-2 in conference play.
For the second day in a row Washington found itself in a hole early as Stanford scored three runs in the first inning. Starter Caitlin Noble gave up a leadoff single to Catalina Morris and walked Lauren Lappin to trigger a Husky pitching change. Senior Ashley Boek entered the game and gave up a three-run home run on her first offering to freshman Michelle Smith, her 12th home run of the year. Boek struck out the next two batters and got a line out to end the frame.
The Cardinal tacked on another run in the second inning with a RBI-single by Jackie Rinehart.
The Huskies chipped at Stanford's lead in the top of fourth with a solo home run by Kristen Rivera. It marked Rivera's 11th home run of the season.
Washington scored two more runs in the fifth inning on four hits. Lauren Greer and Jacki Hansen singled and Ashley Charters doubled through the left side to score Greer. Stanford pulled pitcher Becky McCullough and Laura Severson took the circle. Aimee Minor worked her way to a full count before driving a single into left field to score Hansen. The Cardinal intentionally walked Rivera to load the bases and Severson got out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts to maintain the 4-3 lead.
Severson sat the Huskies down in order in the sixth and seventh innings to preserve the Stanford win.
McCoullough (10-1) earned the victory as she held Washington to three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts over 4.1 innings. Severson picked up her first save of the year as she held Washington to one hit over 2.2 innings with five strikeouts.
Noble (7-6) took the loss for the Huskies as she gave up two runs on one hit in the first inning. Boek pitched six innings of relief, holding the Cardinal to two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts.
Washington hosts Arizona and Arizona State in Pac-10 action next week. The Huskies open against Arizona on April 15 at 1pm. The game will be televised by FSN.
