No. 13 Beavers in California for a second straight day
April 10, 2005
Oregon State was in California for a second straight day for the Windermere Crew Classic today. The Beavers who lost to No. 2 California and beat No. 13 Wisconsin yesterday, were set to race No. 17 Michigan today.
The Varsity Eight got out to a fast start, getting ahead by over 4 seconds in the first 500 meters. Then in the middle 1000, Wisconsin cut the lead to only 1 second, but then in the final 500 the beavers extended the lead and won by over 3 seconds.
'I feel very good about this weekend,' said Head Coach Fred Honebien, 'all in all I was happy about all the races because they were against good competition and the guys seemed to step up.'
Getting out to good starts seems to be a common thing for this Oregon State crew. Against a tough California crew, they were less than a second behind after the first 500 meters. Then against Wisconsin they got out to over a two second lead in the first 500. Then today they lead by over four seconds in the first 500.
'The way these guys race is getting out fast,' said Honebein, 'they don't really plan on doing that, it just comes naturally to them and that's what makes it fun.'
The JV Eight beat Sacramento State today by over 30 seconds, which caps a good weekend for them as well. Yesterday they lost to California by 10 seconds and then came back later in the day to beat Cal Davis by 14 seconds.
The Novice Eight beat Stanford by 22 seconds today, while yesterday they lost to California by 23 second and beat Cal Davis by nine seconds.
When asked what his crews will need to improve on for Stanford and UCLA in two weeks, Honebein replied, 'We really need to just improve our base speed, this was a good test for us this weekend. We raced against some really good crews, and it was the first time they raced under my system.'
The Beavers are off this next weekend, but in two weeks they will battle with Pac-10 opponents Stanford and UCLA.
