No. 23 Beavers Rally Twice To Sweep No. 11 Stanford

April 9, 2005

STANFORD, Calif. - Oregon State came from behind twice to sweep Stanford 9-7 and 11-10 in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday at Sunken Diamond, pushing OSU's win streak to nine games. The Beavers (26-4 overall, 5-0 Pac-10) rallied from seven runs down in the second game to end Stanford's streak of 14 straight series wins at home over the past three seasons.

The Beavers, ranked No. 23 in this week's USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, and Stanford (18-11, 3-2), ranked 11th, conclude their series on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com.

On Saturday, the Beavers trailed 9-2 after three innings of the nightcap before finally taking the lead in the top of the seventh inning. In the opener, OSU had been down 7-5 after seven innings.

'I can't tell you how I feel,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'I'm so proud of these guys. We just absolutely hung with it ... we keep talking about pitching carrying us, and in the sixth inning (of the opener) with Dallas (Buck, OSU's starting pitcher) struggling, I said, `If that's all we are, that we're good when the pitching is good, then we're not that team I thought we are. You've got to suck it up now and pick up these pitchers who have picked us up all year.'

The Beavers responded with a four runs in the final two innings of the opener, then got the win from some unlikely sources in the 3-hour, 43-minute second game. The Beavers tied it in the top of the seventh inning on a two-out, two-run single up the middle by Geoff Wagner, who was playing club baseball for Central Oregon Community College a year ago; OSU then scored the go-ahead run when Chris Campos scored from second on a wild pitch that took a high hop into the massive foul territory at Sunken Diamond.

Kevin Gunderson the worked the final three innings for his seventh save of the season, closing the game with a double play that sent the Beavers streaming onto the field in celebration.

'In the second game, you have to give it to our guys for having the heart to come back and not giving up against Stanford, as great a team as they are,' said OSU centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games by going 5-for-9 with a home run, a double, six runs batted in and a pair of acrobatic catches during the doubleheader. 'It would have been easy for us to take a loss and hope we could come out Sunday and take the series, but it was impressive that our guys battled back and stuck with it ... we got the momentum going, and it was just an awesome win.'

It may have been defense that gave the Beavers a spark in the second game after Stanford had gone up 9-2 with a six-run third inning. With Jake McCormick on in relief of starter Anton Maxwell in the fourth inning, Ellsbury made a diving catch of a drive from Adam Sorgi in left-center while avoiding a collision with leftfielder Tyler Graham; Graham then took an extra-base hit away from Jed Lowrie as he went into the fence to make a catch and end the fourth inning. Then, to start the bottom of the fifth, Ellsbury tracked down a drive from John Mayberry Jr. just to the left of dead centerfield and pulled it back from the top of the fence.

'You could see everybody up in the dugout and out halfway to the field when they made those catches,' Gunderson said. 'I think that really sparked us, those plays really helped us ... those guys made three catches that were unbelievable.'

The Beavers got back within 9-6 with a four-run fourth inning that included a two-run double by Chris Campos and run-scoring singles by Ellsbury and Graham. OSU picked up another run in the top of the fifth to make it 9-7, but Stanford pushed the lead back to 10-7 with a run in the bottom of the sixth off McCormick.

Freshman Eddie Kunz got the Beavers out of the inning by inducing Michael Taylor into a bases-loaded groundout; after OSU's four-run top of the seventh, that earned him the victory for his first career decision.

The Beavers' rally in the top of the seventh began when Shea McFeely and Ryan Gipson drew one-out walks from Greg Reynolds, but he struck out Ellsbury for the second out. Graham then lined a single off Reynolds to load the bases; Campos followed with a nubber up the third-base line that stayed fair for an infield single and drove in a run to make it 10-8.

Wagner fell behind no balls, two strikes in the count and then rolled a single up the middle to plate the tying runs, leaving runners at first and second. The Cardinal turned to Nolan Gallagher and he struck out Darwin Barney on four pitches, but the last win bounced and took a high hop past catcher John Hester, allowing Campos to score from second with the go-ahead run.

The Beavers had 17 hits in the second game, including at least one from every starter. Ellsbury was 3-for-5 with a homer, while Graham was 3-for-6.

In the opener, the Beavers led 5-0 after two innings but Stanford took its first lead at 7-5 on Chris Minaker's two-run homer off Dallas Buck in the top of the seventh inning. Buck gave up a single and double but managed to get out of the inning without further damage.

OSU got the lead back in the top of the eighth, with a one-out error opening the door as it put Shea McFeely aboard. Danny Anderson followed with a single to chase Cardinal starter Mark Romanczuk and pinch-hitter Cole Gillespie greeted Blake Holler with another to load the bases. With two out, pinch-hitter Lonnie Lechelt drew a walk to force in one run and make it 7-6; Jacoby Ellsbury then punched a two-run single through the right side to put OSU in front 8-7.

OSU tacked on another run in the ninth as Darwin Barney led off with a bunt single and eventually scored on McFeely's single up the middle. In the bottom of the ninth, Beaver lefthander Kevin Gunderson struck out Jed Lowrie before walking John Mayberry Jr.; righthander Nate Fogle then fanned John Hester before hitting Ben Summerhays to put the tying run on base. Fogle then got Brendan Domaracki to ground out to end the game and give the Beavers their eighth straight win while ending Stanford's win streak at four games.

Buck improved his record to 7-0 - and gave OSU's three-man starting rotation a record of 18-0 this spring - despite giving up his first two homers of the season, including a grand slam to Chris Lewis that tied the game 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning. He allowed season-highs in runs (7), earned runs (3) and hits (11) but managed to get through seven innings, walking one and striking out three. Fogle earned his fifth save of the season.

Ellsbury matched his career-high with four runs batted in during the opener, also doubling home two runs in a three-run third inning that put OSU up 5-0. 3Anderson tied his career-high for hits by going 3-for-5, his first multi-hit game since Feb. 19 against California-Davis.
