No. 23 OSU Loses In Series Finale, 4-3

April 10, 2005

STANFORD, Calif. - Oregon State's winning streak ended at nine games as the Beavers lost to Stanford 4-3 in Pacific-10 baseball Sunday afternoon at Sunken Diamond. After taking both ends of Saturday's doubleheader between the teams, OSU (26-5 overall, 5-1) had been trying to become the first visiting team to sweep a series at Stanford (19-11, 4-2) since April, 1997.

The Beavers, ranked 23rd in the latest USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, return home to play Portland on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field and then visit Pac-10 leader Arizona next weekend. Those games can all be heard on KEJO-AM (1240).

On Sunday against 11th-ranked Stanford, Jacoby Ellsbury ran his hitting streak to 13 games with a 2-for-3 afternoon that included a double. But the Beavers became the last Pacific-10 team to lose a conference game as they committed a season-high five errors, leading to a pair of unearned runs, and left 11 runners on base.

'Like I told our club, we played our worst game of the season and they beat us 4-3,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'We did not play well today. The nice thing is we were able to win the series, but we could have easily won all three games had we just done the fundamental things in baseball in the last game. We've been good in that area all year long, and today we just didn't do them and it cost us a ballgame.'

OSU lead 3-1 going to the bottom of the fourth inning but committed three errors behind sophomore righthander Jonah Nickerson leading to a pair of unearned runs that knotted the game 3-3. Stanford finally scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh when OSU reliever Nate Fogle walked Adam Sorgi, he was sacrificed to second and then scored on Jed Lowrie's single to right-centerfield for a 4-3 lead.

OSU put runners at first and second with two out in the top of the eighth, but reliever Matt Manship retired Tyler Graham to end the inning and then retired the Beavers in order in the ninth. That was the only one-two-three inning for Oregon State at the plate all afternoon.

Oregon State outhit the Cardinal 12-6. Nickerson went the first six innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk while striking out seven.

'Jonah Nickerson was outstanding today,' Casey said. 'He pitched great. He gave us everything he had and we just didn't take care of business behind him.

'The positive thing about the whole thing is that our guys recognize that if we play fundamental baseball today, we win all three.'

As it was, the Beavers ended Stanford's string of 14 straight series wins at home after coming from behind in the late innings twice on Saturday.

'To come down and win a series and Stanford and be disappointed because we didn't win all three games is hopefully a sign that these guys think they can be a pretty good club.'

Darwin Barney had a career high in hits by going 4-for-4 for the Beavers, while Geoff Wagner was 2-for-5 with his first career home run. That led off a two-run third inning that gave OSU a 3-1 lead; Barney then singled with one out, went to third on Shea McFeely's ground-rule double that hopped over the left-centerfield fence, and scored on Mitch Canham's groundout.
