No. 3 California Falls to No. 12 UCLA, 2-1
April 10, 2005
BERKELEY - A solo home run from catcher Haley Woods in the bottom of the seventh inning was the only offense the No. 3 California softball team could muster in a 2-1 loss to No. 12 UCLA Sunday at Levine-Fricke Field.
Bruins starter Anjelica Selden (12-6) held the Bears hitless and faced just two batters over the minimum through six and two-thirds innings. Woods broke up the no-hitter with her team-leading 12th home run of the year, a two-strike, line-drive that barely cleared the right field wall.
Bruins' catcher Emily Zaplatosch provided UCLA with all the runs it would need in the top of the first. The junior dropped a double inches inside the right field foul line to score third baseman Andrea Duran and center fielder Tara Henry.
Prior to Woods' homer, the Bears had just two baserunners. Center fielder Kaleo Eldredge drew a two-out walk in the first and Selden hit designated player Emily Friedman with one out in the second. Selden, who struck out eight, retired the next 16 Bears.
Cal starter Kristina Thorson (15-3) struck out five Bruins and scattered five hits as Cal fell to 35-5 on the season and 4-2 in the Pac-10. UCLA improved to 20-10 on the year and 1-4 in the conference.
The two clubs square off again April 29 at UCLA's Easton Stadium, where Cal can clinch its first season-series victory against the Bruins since 1998. Cal resumes action Wednesday in a doubleheader at Sacramento State. First pitch at the Hornets' Shea Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
