No. 8 Cardinal Defeat No. 20 Washington 4-3

Stanford, Calif. - Freshman third baseman Michelle Smith hit her 12th homerun of the season to help the eighth-ranked Stanford softball team to a 4-3 win over No. 20 Washington this afternoon at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal improve to 28-7 on the year, 3-2 in the Pac-10 while the Huskies drop to 19-14, 1-5 in conference play.
Stanford jumped out to an early lead, scoring three in the bottom of the first. Catalina Morris led things off with a single up the middle. Lauren Lappin walked to put runners on first and second. After a pitching change, Michelle Smith hit her 12th homerun of the season to leftfield, bringing everyone home.
The Cardinal picked up another run in the bottom of the second. Freshman Erin Howe doubled to left centerfield to get things started. Katherine Hoffman came in as a pinch runner for Howe. Jackie Rinehart singled up the middle to score Hoffman.
Washington's Kristen Rivera hit a solo shot over the leftfield fence to put the Huskies on the board.
The Huskies picked up two more runs in the top of the fifth to make the score 4-3 and chase starter Becky McCullough from the circle.
Freshman Becky McCullough (10-1) picked up the win in the circle, allowing three runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings of work while junior Laura Severson recorded her first save of the year, scattering one hit over 2.2 innings of work with five strikeouts.
Caitlin Noble (7-6) took the loss for Washington, allowing two runs on one hit in 0.0 innings pitched.
Stanford is back in action next weekend as they hit the road to face Oregon and Oregon State.
