Stanford Varsity Eights Win Races To Close Competition At The 2005 Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic

Stanford's No. 5 men's and No. 10 women's varsity eights each posted convincing victories to close out competition at the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic on the Redwood Shores Lagoon, in Redwood City, CA, April 10. The Cardinal men's varsity eight finished the weekend at 2-1 including victories over No. 9 Yale and No. 8 Dartmouth and find themselves firmly entrenched in the upper echelon of U.S. Collegiate rowing. The Stanford women's varsity eight defeated Clemson to finish the regatta an undefeated 3-0. However, the Cardinal lightweight women suffered their first setback of the season.

'We're very excited about the opportunities we had this weekend to square off against top competition from across the country,' said Stanford's director of rowing and men's head coach, Craig Amerkhanian. 'The regatta was an immense success thanks to the generous sponsorship of Windermere Real Estate and were pleased that we have can offer this type of experience to all the student-athletes who raced this weekend.'

Men's Varsity Recap
No. 5 Stanford headed to the line this morning rested and ready for No. 9 Yale. The Cardinal blasted off the line taking nearly a length in the first 500 meters of the race and never looked back, maintaining their advantage all the way down the course. No. 2 Cal squared off against No. 12 Wisconsin and while the Badgers were able to hang with the Bears in the early going, the Cal overpowered Wisconsin in second half of the race. No. 13 Oregon State proved to be too much for No. 17 Michigan and No. 4 Washington overpowered No. 8 Dartmouth. Both Cal and Washington finished the regatta undefeated.

Women's Varsity Recap
The No. 10 Stanford women's varsity eight wrapped up its weekend with a convincing win over Clemson. The Cardinal took a length advantage by the time the crews reached the 1000m mark and continued to move out all the way to the finish. The No. 5 California women's varsity eight also finished the regatta a perfect 3-0 picking up a victory over No. 9 Virginia in Sunday's race. The No. 11 Washington women's varsity was too much for No. 14 Wisconsin doing most of the damage in the second 500 meters of the race while No. 13 UCLA hooked the Texas Longhorns.

Women's Lightweight Varsity Recap
The Princeton lightweight showed that it was will be a player in the hunt for the national championship with a convincing victory over previously undefeated Stanford. However, Wisconsin finished off the weekend at 3-0 with a win over San Diego State while the Georgetown women's lightweight eight got past Cal.

Other Racing
In addition to the varsity racing, the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic, hosted races at the JV and Frosh/Novice levels for a total of 27 collegiate events on day two of regatta pushing the collegiate race total to 78 over the course of competition. Similar to the racing format on Saturday, Windermere also hosted 34 additional junior men's and women's and masters rowing events, Sunday. In all, over the course of the regatta, 133 Henley-style dual races were contested.

President's Message
'I think (our Windermere team) gets so much out of seeing the student-athletes' appreciation over the weekend,' said President of Windermere Real Estate, Matt Carroll. 'It's a great feeling to give back to the Bay Area community. We hope Windermere and Stanford will continue this relationship for a long time. We're in our 20th year sponsoring the Windermere Cup in Seattle and I hope I'll be in the Bay Area celebrating the 20th Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic down the road.'
