UW Men's Varsity Crews are Perfect at Windermere Classic

April 10, 2005

BELMONT, Calif. - The Washington men's varsity eight and junior varsity eight crews posted perfect records over the weekend at the two-day Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic that concluded Sunday at Redwood Shores.

The Henley-style match racing format was used for this weekend's regatta in the Bay Area. Rather than rowing the course alongside five other boats as is customary, each crew competed head-to-head with just one other boat. The Collegiate Classic was hosted for the third year by the same real estate company that has been a 19-year sponsor of the Windermere Cup, Washington's annual Opening Day regatta that takes place May 7 in Seattle.

The Huskies' top-two men's boats finished in a tie in their events with California, which also went undefeated. The West Coast rivals did not row against each other in varsity events. They will meet in two weeks in the annual Washington-Cal dual regatta on April 23 at UW's Montlake Cut course.

'It was a good first weekend and a step in the right direction,' said Husky men's coach Bob Ernst. 'This format is really good because it gives you a chance to see everyone race. We found out that Stanford has a good crew, but that Cal is the one we have to beat. Everyone down here is buzzing about the race up in Seattle in a couple weeks between Cal and Washington.'

The Washington women won their final two races to finish with a 2-1 record in the varsity eight competition. Stanford and California each went undefeated to share top honors in the featured women's event.
