April 9, 2005

TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 68 Washington State women's tennis team lost it's second straight dual match Saturday as they were defeated by the No. 50 Arizona Wildcats 7-0. The Cougars (9-12, 0-6 Pac-10) have just two dual matches left in the season.

Arizona boasted two ranked singles players and one ranked singles tandem to put down the Cougar effort. In doubles play Orsolya Sallai/Chris Martinez combined to make the No. 1 pair for the Cougars and they were shut down, 8-3, by No. 32-ranked Maja Mlakar/Dianne Hollands. At the No. 2 position Cougars Ekaterina Burduli/Nora Gaal came the closest to a doubles win but fell to Kasia Jakowlew/Jessie Rochefort 8-6. Play did not go any smoother at the No. 3 slot for Aleksandra Stefanova/Amy Toth who were knocked off 8-1 by Kelly Perry/Camelia Todorova.

Burduli came the closest to capturing a singles win for the Cougars. The Tel Aviv, Israel-native took her match against No. 20 Hollands to three sets before narrowing falling in a tie-breaker 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5). The Wildcats' No. 87-ranked Mlakar sunk Sallai 6-1, 6-0. The No. 3 through No. 6 singles matches were all straight sets triumphs for Arizona.

'We are going to take this week to get focused and prepared for our final matches against Washington and Oregon,' Washington State head coach Lisa Hart said.

The Cougars will be back in action Friday, April 15 against the Washington Huskies in Seattle. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m.
