No. 10 Softball Has 22-Game Winning Streak Snapped With 3-0 Setback To No. 8 Stanford
April 15, 2005
CORVALLIS, Ore. - A first inning home run helped lift No. 8 ranked Stanford University to a 3-0 victory against No. 10 ranked Oregon State, snapping the Beavers' 22-game winning streak on Friday afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex.
The Beavers (28-7; 7-1 Pac-10) suffered their first Pacific-10 Conference set-back of the season while the Cardinal (29-7; 4-2 Pac-10) won its sixth straight outing in Corvallis.
Stanford third baseman Michelle Smith gave the Cardinal an early 2-0 advantage when she blasted a first inning home run over the left-center field fence against Beaver ace Brianne McGowan (25-3).
OSU struggled to put things together offensively as Cardinal freshman Becky McCullough (11-1) scattered three hits in the shutout.
The Beavers got the lead-off runner aboard in both the sixth and seventh innings, but failed to capitalize.
Kelly Petersen started the sixth with a single up the middle but Stanford forced out the lead runner on the next two batters to get out of the frame. Lisa Allen opened the seventh with a walk, but McGowan's lined shot was snagged by Stanford shortstop Lauren Lappin and wound up being a double-play.
'They got some breaks and we didn't,' said McGowan, who had her personal streak of 21 consecutive victories broken. 'That's just the way it goes some times.'
McGowan threw her 20th complete game of the year and matched her career-high with 10 strikeouts.
Stanford added an insurance run in the top of the seventh after Jackie Rinehart roped an RBI triple.
Oregon State hosts No. 3 ranked California on Saturday at 1 p.m.
