No. 3 California Rallies to Beat No. 25 Oregon, 6-5

April 15, 2005

EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 3 California softball team scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to come from behind and defeat No. 25 Oregon, 6-5, at Howe Field on Friday evening.

Cal (38-5 overall, 5-2 Pac-10) erased a 3-0 deficit in the fifth as catcher Haley Woods' two-out single scored centerfielder Kaleo Eldredge and shortstop Chelsea Spencer.

A single by third baseman Vicky Galindo with one out in the sixth scored pinch runner Erika Racklin to start the Cal rally. Spencer then laced a double to right field to plate pinch runner Jessica Vernaglia and Galindo. Two batters later, second baseman Jessica Pamanian singled home Spencer for the eventual winning run.

Starter Kelly Anderson held the Ducks to one hit through three and two-thirds innings but allowed a bases-clearing triple to Oregon second baseman Erin Goodell in the fourth. Anderson was pulled in favor of Kristina Thorson, who struck out center fielder Suzie Barnes to end the inning.

In the sixth, Thorson (17-4), the pitcher of record when Cal took the lead, gave up an RBI-triple to pinch hitter Kristi Leiter and a run-scoring double to Goodell. After Thorson hit Barnes with a pitch, Cal head coach Diane Ninemire brought Anderson back into the game and the senior struck out Oregon left fielder Lovena Chaput to end the threat.

Ducks shortstop Breanne Sabol singled to lead off the Oregon seventh, stole second base and advanced to third on a groundout by right fielder Dani Baird. Anderson, however, struck out designated player Ann Marie Topps to end the game.

Galindo, Spencer and Pamanian each finished with two hits for Cal.

Oregon starter Amy Harris (12-7) struck out five in a losing effort.

The Bears return to action Saturday at No. 10 Oregon State at 1 p.m. The Beavers (28-7, 7-1), suffered their first Pac-10 loss on Friday to No. 8 Stanford, 3-0.
