Rich Feller Thoughts

April 15, 2005

BERKELEY, CA - Hello Again Cal Volleyball Fans,

I am very excited about our team's progress in our third week of spring practice. Last weekend we played a tournament at USF and I think held our own very well. We split with every team we played, which tells us we can beat everyone and that we have to continue to improve to beat those same teams consistently. Winning was not the ultimate goal in this tournament, but it still always feels better to with than to lose.

We played USF, Sac State and Nevada for our first three matches. We used several different line ups to give everyone an opportunity to play a lot of volleyball. Our final match of the day was against our old favorite rival, Stanford. As could be expected, it was a battle. We lost the first game 31-29 and came back to win game two 31-29. The tournament was set up to allow for only two games in each match, but this was a satisfying way to end the day.

Our squad included starters from last year's team, Alicia Powers, Jenna Brown (playing back row only after knee surgery in January), Angie Pressey and Sam Carter. Alexis Kollias and Vivian Cheung also played defensive roles for us and Julie Fouts did a little setting. Am'ra Solomon and Ellen Orchard played a variety of positions in the front row and Natalie Smart played mostly middle blocker. Jill Davis is still sidelined recovering from her knee surgery, but is at practice doing more everyday. Meredith Hasson is getting over an illness, so was there supporting her team along with Jill, but could not play.

We really saw some great things from starters and subs alike. I am very excited about the direction the team is heading and couldn't be happier with each player's commitment. My coaching staff is great and the team is responding well to Matt (McShane) and practices with a little different pace to them. This week we are in Sacramento and their tournament. We play at 9, 11, 12:30 and 2:30 at Sac State. It will be a long day of good competition and the team is looking forward to playing again.

Well, that's about all for now. Let me know if you would like to add anyone to my email list, or if you would like to be taken off. Our schedule for 2005 is finally completed, so check out our web site in the next few days to see it.

Until next time,
