No. 10 Oregon State Comes Back to Beat No. 3 Cal, 6-5
April 16, 2005
CORVALLIS, Ore. - No. 10 Oregon State exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat the No. 3 California softball team at the OSU Softball Complex on Saturday, 6-5.
Cal second baseman Jessica Pamanian gave the Bears (38-6 overall, 5-3 Pac-10) a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with her third homer of the season, a shot to left field off of Beavers starter Brianne McGowan that scored shortstop Chelsea Spencer and center fielder Kaleo Eldredge.
Pac-10 Conference leaders Oregon State (29-7, 8-1) answered with a run in the third as first baseman Vanessa Iapala singled home right fielder Adrienne Alo. The rest of the Beavers' damage was done in the fifth. Cal committed more errors (3) in the inning than the Beavers had hits (2) and only one of Oregon State's runs - a leadoff homer by second baseman Kelly Peterson - was earned.
Trailing 6-3, the Bears rallied in the sixth as first baseman Julie Meyer and designated player Jeana Gevas hit back-to-back solo homers to close the gap. Eldredge led off the Cal seventh with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Pamanian. McGowan, however, struck out catcher Haley Woods and left fielder Emily Friedman to end the game.
The Bears outhit Oregon State 10-4 on the afternoon as Pamanian, Meyer and Gevas each accumulated two.
Cal starter Kelly Anderson lost for just the second time all season, falling to 20-2. Amy Klever, who pitched four innings of relief for OSU, improved to 2-2.
The Beavers' rally came a day after Cal scored four runs in the top of the sixth to slide past No. 25 Oregon, 6-5. The Bears wrap-up their Oregon road trip Sunday against the Beavers at 1 p.m.
