No. 15 OSU loses baseball series-opener

April 15, 2005

TUCSON, Ariz. - Shea McFeely tied an Oregon State single-game record by hitting three doubles, but the rally they sparked fell short as the 15th-ranked Beavers lost to eighth-ranked Arizona 7-5 in Pacific-10 baseball Friday night at Kindall Field at Sancet Stadium. Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 14 games for OSU (26-6 overall, 5-2 Pac-10), which cut an early five-run deficit to a single run in the late innings but couldn't complete the comeback.

The Beavers and Wildcats (25-10, 9-1) continue their series Saturday at 7 p.m. and conclude it Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com.

The loss marked the first time this season OSU has dropped back-to-back games. It was also the first time a member of the Beavers' weekend starting rotation took a loss, as sophomore righthander Dallas Buck's record dropped to 7-1.

'We battled, we just didn't make adjustments to the umpire,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'Their guy (UA junior righthander John Meloan) was good enough to throw the ball where he was calling strikes, and we never made the adjustment. Our guys battled. That's a very good baseball team, but we made too many mistakes early.

'We came back, we outhit them (10-8), we just couldn't put it all together. Their guy was very, very good at putting the ball where he wanted to put it. I don't know how many times you're going to strike out 15 times and win a game. We didn't make the right adjustments, and I think if we had done that earlier, we would have put some more runs on the board.'

OSU fanned 15 times against Meloan and relievers Eric Berger and Mark Melancon. Meloan improved to 7-0 this season, going six innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out 11.

After giving up five runs in the first two innings, Buck steadied himself and pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out four. The Beavers pulled within 5-3 while he was still on the mound and eventually got within 6-5 in the eighth inning.

'We just did some little things that cost us a bit, and when you're on the road and playing one of the best teams in the country, there's no room for error,' Casey said. 'We stayed in there and competed, but we're going to have to play better if we're going to win down here.'

McFeely tied a record held by many players and last accomplished earlier this season by Mike Lissman in a Feb. 5 win over New Mexico State. His hits were key to the Beavers making it a game of it after trailing 5-0 after three innings.

Oregon State got back in the ballgame with three runs in the top of the sixth inning off Meloan. Andy Jenkins ledoff with an infield single and Chris Campos slapped a single to leftfield. With one out, McFeely doubled to left-center to drive in both runners and an error on the play sent him to third; he scored on a two-out wild pitch to make it 5-3.

UA blunted the Beavers' momentum with two out in the bottom of the seventh when Jordan Brown homered to right-center to bump the lead to 6-3.

In the top of the eighth, pinch-hitter Danny Anderson drew a leadoff walk and the Wildcats brought in closer Mark Melancon. He promptly gave up back-to-back doubles to Darwin Barney - who had a pair of two-base hits in the game - and McFeely to make it 6-5 and put the tying run at second with none out.

But Mitch Canham popped up a bunt attempt and Melancon struck out Geoff Wagner and Joey Ledesma to end the inning. Arizona then picked up an unearned run against OSU reliever Nate Fogle in the bottom of the eighth; the Beavers managed to bring the tying run to the plate with two out in the ninth but couldn't get it on base.

Arizona took an early 4-0 lead with four runs on just one hit in the bottom of the second after Dallas Buck issued a pair of walks and hit a batter to load the bases with two out for the top of the order. Trevor Crowe tripled to right to drive in three runs, then stole home for the final run.

The Wildcats tacked on another run in the third as Nick Hundley singled through the left side with two out, then scored on Chris Frey's double just inside first base.
