Rocky Hinds Throws 3 TD Passes In End-Of-Spring Scrimmage
April 16, 2005
Redshirt freshman quarterback Rocky Hinds threw three touchdown passes to lead his Gold team to a 34-14 victory over the Cardinal team in an intrasquad scrimmage on Howard Jones Field on Saturday (April 16) that concluded spring practice for the two-time defending national champion USC football team.
Hinds' first scoring throw went for 57 yards, as walk-on senior tailback Andre Woodert took it the first 47 yards before fumbling and having senior wide receiver William Buchanon pick it up and bring it 10 yards into the end zone. Buchanon also caught a 42-yard scoring pass from Hinds, who was 14-of-25 for 222 yards with an interception overall. Sophomore tight end Fred Davis caught a 7-yard pass from Hinds on the last play of the scrimmage.
Sophomore tailback Desmond Reed scampered 61 yards on the scrimmage's initial series to open the scoring for the Gold team. Reed ran for 100 yards on 8 carries overall and also had a 31-yard kickoff return.
The Gold's other score came on sophomore linebacker Keith Rivers' 31-yard return of an interception off of sophomore quarterback John David Booty.
Both of the Cardinal team's scores came on short runs: 1 yard by sophomore tailback Chauncey Washington and 3 yards on a Booty draw.
Booty, who was operating against the first team defense most of the day, was just 6-of-20 for 63 yards.
Buchanon had 3 catches for 83 yards. Freshman tailback Michael Coleman ran for 55 yards on 12 carries, while Washington added 37 yards on 10 attempts.
'This was a really good day for us,' said USC head coach Pete Carroll. 'I was hoping we would hold our intensity from last week's scrimmage in the Coliseum, and we got that done. We got some real solid work done and our players competed hard throughout the scrimmage.'
USC opens its 2005 season at Hawaii on Sept. 3.
