Ulrick PRs in Discus at Mt. SAC Relays Second Day

WALNUT, Calif. -- Washington State sophomore Drew Ulrick took second place in the men's discus Saturday at the 47th Annual Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium at Walnut, Calif.
Ulrick, from Mead High, Spokane, Wash., threw the discus a personal-best and improved NCAA Regional Qualifying distance of 177-feet, 5 inches (54.07m) for second place in the University/Open event, missing first place by nine inches.
Tyson Byers (redshirt sophomore, Spokane Valley, Wash.) cleared 17-6 1/2 (5.35m) and was the top collegian in the University/Open men's pole vault. That height equals Byers's season-best and is an NCAA RQ. Senior Paul Nicoletti (Snohomish, Wash.) cleared the pole vault bar at 16-6 3/4, equaling his PR and NCAA RQ. Nicoletti's place was not available at press time.
Ryan Thomas (junior, Olympia, Wash.) high jumped 6-8 3/4 (2.05m) for fourth place in the University/Open men's event.
At the McDonald's Outdoor Meet at Moscow Saturday, Brett Ortgiesen (senior, Gig Harbor, Wash.) won the men's javelin with a PR toss of 197-10 (60.31m). Ben Hampton (junior, Kennewick, Wash.) won the triple jump with a leap of 46-7 1/3 (14.20m) into a headwind while Mason Kien (sophomore, Des Moines, Wash.) won the long jump with a wind-aided leap of 23-0 1/2 (7.02m). Kyle Eaton (freshman, Ellensburg, Wash.) won the high jump equaling his season-best of 6-6 3/4 (2.00m). Darion Powell (junior, Kirkland, Wash.) threw a PR in the discus of 156-2 (47.59m) for third place.
Among the Cougar women, McKenzie Burgess (redshirt freshman, Benton City, Wash.) won the shot put with a toss of 44-2 (13.46m) and then finished second in the discus (153-0/46.63m) to WSU's volunteer assistant coach Andrea Thornton (159-7). McKinnon Hanson (freshman, LaPush, Wash.) high jumped a PR of 5-5 (1.65m) for second place.
Washington State track and field athletes compete at again Sunday at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., and return to Pullman April 23 for the Cougar Invitational.
