WSU Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four Capture Wins Over UW

PULLMAN, Wash. -- - The Washington State women's rowing team defeated the University of Washington in two races Saturday during a dual regatta on the Snake River at Wawawai Landing, outside of Pullman.
The Cougars captured wins in the varsity four and second varsity eight competitions. WSU fell to Washington by just over two seconds in the varsity eight race.
'We did well today,' said WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere. 'We set ourselves up well with wins in the varsity four and second varsity eight races. We lost a tight one in the varsity eight, but I think that two and a half seconds is a deficit that we can work to easily overcome.'
In the first varsity women's action of the afternoon, the Cougars took the top two finishes in the varsity four race. The WSU 'A' crew of coxswain Meghann Price, Jennifer Copeland, Carey Homan, Casey Long and Sarah Lende captured the victory with a time of 7:31.44.
The WSU 'B' squad finished second in the fours race with a time of 7:40.73. Placing third and fourth were the UW 'A' and 'B' squads rowing to times of 7:42.14 and 7:45.71.
The second WSU victory of the day came during the second varsity eight race. Battling windy conditions, the Cougars were able to defeat the Huskies by five seconds. The Cougar 'A' squad of coxswain Kelly O'Brien, Sharon Finney, Amy Jo Hendershot, Willow English, Laura Griffin, Suzanne Vogt, Kim Behrends, Lori Maricle and Becca Gibson, completed the course in a time of 6:41.03. Washington's 'A' crew finished second with a time of 6:46.43, while WSU 'B' and UW 'B' placed third and fourth with times of 6:55.1 and 7:09.64.
The varsity eight race between No. 11 Washington and No. 16 WSU turned out to be the closest women's race of the day with the outcome decided by just over two seconds. Washington gained a slight advantage over WSU early on in the race and was able to maintain the advantage throughout the rest of the 2000 meter event.
UW finished with a time of 6:30.14, while the Cougars' crew which was comprised of coxswain May Lundberg, Catherine Shirley, Adele Durfey, Jody Thomas, Sarah Waterfield, Kasha Bloch, Robyn Stephenson, Lina Brazinskaite and Emily Collins, crossed the finish line with a mark of 6:32.8.
In the second novice eight race, UW 'A' squad rowed to a time of 7:14.11, while the Cougars finished second with 7:29.46, and UW 'B' placed third at 7:41.52.
In the novice eight race, the Cougars completed the course with a mark of 7:08.39, but was unable to defeat UW who finished with a time of 6:58.62. In the final novice race of the day, the novice four squad from Washington earned a mark of 8:15.39, while WSU completed the course with a time of 8:58.99.
The men's crews from both schools also participated in the dual regatta, with the UW varsity men's crew sweeping the WSU men's club rowing squad in four events. The Husky men captured wins in the varsity eight, second varsity/novice eight, second/third novice eight and varsity four races.
The Cougs return to action Saturday April 23 when they travel to take on Tennessee in a dual regatta.
