Huskies Run-Rule Arizona State, 12-4

SEATTLE-- Kathy Fiske hit a grand slam and Sarah Hyatt and Dominique Lastrapes hit home runs to lead No. 24 Washington to a 12-4 mercy-rule win over No. 21 Arizona State this afternoon at Husky Softball Stadium. The Huskies improve to 21-14 overall and 3-5 in the Pac-10, while the Sun Devils dip to 26-16 and 1-9 in conference action.
ASU struck first, scoring one run in the top of the first inning with a RBI-single by Ashley Werschky. The hit scored Bridgette Caron who led off the game with a double to left centerfield.
The Huskies answered in the bottom half of the frame with a two-out grand slam by Fiske off of starter Katie Burkhart. The blast, Fiske's fourth career grand slam, ties Jenny Topping for the most in school history.
Washington kept the offense flowing in the second inning with a two-out three-run home run by Hyatt off of Werschky who entered the circle in relief. The hit marked the 11th of the season for Hyatt and scored Lastrapes and Kristen Rivera who had reached base via a single and intentional walk.
Arizona State scored a run in the fourth inning off of reliever Ashley Boek to cut Washington's lead to 7-2. Kim Zadronzy walked and scored on Caron's second double of the afternoon.
In the bottom of the fourth the Huskies got the run back plus one more as Lastrapes hit her second home run of the season with a line drive to centerfield to give UW the 9-2 edge.
The Sun Devils tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning with a two-run home run by Zadronzy to cut the lead to 9-4.
Washington closed out the game with a walk-off three-run double by Rivera to give Washington the 12-4 victory.
Caitlin Noble (8-6) earned the win for UW as she held ASU to four hits and one run over three innings, while striking out five. Ashley Boek pitched three innings of relief, allowing three runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
Burkhart (10-9) took the loss for Arizona State as she gave up two hits and four runs in one inning. Werschky pitched four innings of relief, giving up eight runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
The Huskies hit the road next week to take on UCLA in a two-game series April 22-23.
