No. 15 OSU Has Game Slip Away In Ninth

April 17, 2005

TUCSON, Ariz. - Oregon State allowed a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and the 15th-ranked Beavers fell to eighth-ranked Arizona 7-6 in Pacific-10 baseball Sunday afternoon at Kindall Field at Sancet Stadium. OSU (27-7 overall, 6-3 Pac-10), which had rallied from a 4-1 deficit to a 6-4 lead, was within an inning of its second straight series win on the road against a nationally-ranked team.

The Beavers now return home for series the next two weekends against Washington State and Arizona State and then a non-conference game against Portland on May 3. All games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240).

A pair of Beavers extended their hitting streaks, Jacoby Ellsbury to 16 games and Shea McFeely to 10. Ellsbury's streak matches the longest of his career, while McFeely's is now the longest of his career.

In the finale against Arizona (26-11, 10-2), Jason Donald slapped a two-out single through the left side of the infield against OSU reliever Kevin Gunerson to drive in the winning run. A hit batter, a balk and a single had put runners at the corners with none out; Nate Fogle then replaced Gunderson on the mound and got a groundout from Jeff Van Houten that scored the tying run

Fogle intentionally walked Jordan Brown to put runners at first and second with one out, then walked Nick Hundley to load the bases. Gunderson, who had gone to rightfield when Fogle entered the game, returned to the mound and got a sharply-hit grounder from Chris Fey; shortstop Darwin Barney, playing in, knocked the ball down and threw to the plate in time for the second out.

Donald was next, he knocked the first pitch from Gunderson through the left side to end the game.

Gunderson took the loss, dropping his record to 2-2 as he went 3 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out four. OSU starter Jonah Nickerson had gone the first five innings, giving up just one earned run on six hits and two walks while striking out one..

Oregon State trailed 4-2 going into the top of the eighth inning and then scored four times against Arizona closer Mark Melancon. With two out, a run-scoring groundout by Barney and a run-scoring single by Andy Jenkins tied the game; after an error on a ball hit by McFeely kept the inning going and loaded the bases, Cole Gillespie singled up the middle to drive in two runs for a 6-4 lead.

Ellsbury was 3-for-5 for OSU; it was his 18th multi-hit game of the season and the 12th in which he has had at least three hits. McFeely was also 3-for-5 with a double and finished the series 9-for-15 with five doubles and six runs batted in.

The Wildcats made it a one-run game in the bottom of the seventh when Gunderson walked Van Houten with one out, he advanced to third on a single by Brown and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Hundley to get within 6-5.

OSU's comeback began in the top of the fifth inning when Chris Kunda, making his first start in nearly a month, homered to leftfield off Arizona lefthander David Coulon to make it 4-2. It was Kunda's first homer since May 4, 2003.

Arizona took advantage of a pair of OSU errors to take a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning, with two of the runs unearned against Nickerson. Brown singled home the go-ahead run with one out, then Donald and Derek Decater added two-out singles to drive in runs.

The Beavers jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Ellsbury and Tyler Graham singled to start the game against Arizona lefthander David Coulon. With two out, McFeely lined a single to center to drive home Ellsbury.

Arizona tied it with an unearned run in the bottom of the second against as Frey reached on an error and eventually scored on Decater's one-out single to right. The Wildcats still had two runners on with two out for leadoff hitter Trevor Crowe, but Nickerson got him to ground out to first base toe end the inning with the score still 1-1.
