Havner, London Named to Lott Trophy Watch List
April 18, 2005
Newport Beach, Ca. - UCLA linebackers Spencer Havner and Justin London have been named to the 2005 Lott Trophy Watch List, it was announced today. They are two of the 42 top defensive players in the nation on the list.
Havner, who led the Pac-10 in tackles with 11.3 per game last season, was an all-conference choice and a semifinalist for both the Butkus and Lombardi awards. London was on the Butkus and Lombardi watch lists a year ago.
Named after Hall of Famer and former USC All-American Ronnie Lott, The Trophy goes to the college defensive player of the year who has the biggest IMPACT both on and off the field. Georgia's David Pollack won the inaugural award last year.
Sponsored by the IMPACT Foundation of The Pacific Club, the award is given to a player who exhibits the same characteristics that Lott embodied during his distinguished career: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity. It is the only college award that is based on both performance and character.
The inaugural banquet featured an array of football luminaries, including Lott, Marcus Allen, Bill Walsh, John Robinson and Pat Haden. Pollack and the other two finalists - Derrick Johnson of Texas and Jim Leonhard of Wisconsin - were also in attendance. The banquet was sold out. In its inaugural year, The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation gave $75,000 to charities supporting America's youth.
Each of the three Lott Trophy Finalists was awarded with a Mentoring Program sponsored by The Pacific Club of Newport Beach, Ca. Its members have offered to Mentor The Lott Trophy finalists as they transition from college to professional life. The Pacific Club is the premier city club in Orange County, Ca. Orange County is the 26th largest economy in the world and the Members of The Pacific Club are the business leaders of Orange County.
The 2005 awards banquet will be held on Dec. 11 with Jack Kemp as the keynote speaker. The event was sold out by March 15.
