No. 10 Softball Comes Up Short Against No. 3 California, 2-1
April 18, 2005
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 10 ranked Oregon State softball team came up just short on Monday afternoon as the Beavers dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 3 ranked California at the OSU Softball Complex.
Despite the loss, the Beavers (29-8; 8-2 Pac-10) remain in sole possession of first place in the Pacific-10 Conference standings. Oregon State has played 10 consecutive games against teams ranked in the top-25, going 8-2 in the stretch.
The difference in the game came during the top of the third inning, as a pair of Bear hits proved costly for the Beavers and Cal (39-6; 6-3 Pac-10) took a 2-0 lead when third baseman Vicky Galindo ripped a two-run shot over the right field fence.
Oregon State answered with one run in the bottom half of the third as junior Adrienne Alo lined her team-leading 11th home run off the season over the left-center field fence. Sophomore shortstop Mia Longfellow followed with a single, but the Beavers' speedster was caught attempting to steal, ending the inning.
Beaver catcher Lisa Allen ended both the second and third inning by gunning down a pair of Cal base runners attempting to steal second.
OSU let a golden opportunity go to waste in the bottom of the sixth. Alo led-off the frame with a walk and the Beavers loaded the bases after back-to-back singles from Longfellow and Vanessa Iapala, but Cal hurler Kelly Anderson (21-2) worked her way out of the jam by getting a strikeout and forcing a pair of groundouts to keep the score at 2-1.
OSU held a 5-4 advantage in hits on the afternoon with Longfellow recording a 2-for-4 performance from the plate and Alo finishing with a 1-for-2 clip and two walks.
Beaver pitcher Brianne McGowan (25-4) tossed her 21st complete game of the season, scattering four hits and striking out three.
Oregon State hits the road for a non-conference double-header at Saint Mary's College on Wednesday afternoon. First-pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
