No. 3 California Weathers No. 10 Oregon State, 2-1
April 18, 2005
CORVALLIS, Ore. - In a game postponed a day because of weather complications, the No. 3 California softball team received a two-run homer from third baseman Vicky Galindo to defeat No. 10 Oregon State, 2-1, on Monday at the OSU Softball Complex.
Originally, the game was scheduled to be played Sunday, but poor field conditions as a result of rain cancelled the affair. The Beavers had offered to play a doubleheader in place of a previously scheduled May 6 date in Berkeley. The Pac-10 Conference intervened, however, and mandated the game be played Monday, weather permitting.
Cal first baseman Julie Meyer singled to lead off the third for the Bears and, with senior Jessica Vernaglia pinch running, Galindo swatted her second homer of the year - a shot to right field - off of Beavers starter Brianne McGowan (25-4).
Oregon State right fielder Adrienne Alo answered for the Beavers in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer. Cal starter Kelly Anderson, however, limited the Beavers to three more hits on the afternoon to improve to a team-leading 21-2.
Cal (39-6 overall, 6-3 Pac-10) began the road trip with a 6-5 defeat of No. 25 Oregon on Friday before falling to the Beavers, 6-5, on Saturday.
The Bears return to the Bay Area this week to contest a three-game series with No. 8 Stanford, beginning Friday at 7 p.m. at the Cardinal's Boyd Family Stadium. The series resumes Saturday and finishes Sunday at Levine-Fricke Field in Berkeley. Both weekend matchups are slated for 1 p.m.
