OSU 10th After First Day Of Pac-10s
April 18, 2005
PLEASANTON, Calif.- - The Oregon State women's golf team sits in 10th place Monday after the first round of the Pac-10 Championships at the Ruby Hills Golf Club. The Beavers finished the day with a team total of 327.
'Inexperience has held us back for the most part on this difficult golf course,' Coach Risë Lakowske said. 'We also made a lot of mistakes around the greens.'
Sophomore Jill Ferrante, after having to withdraw from the Peg Barnard last week due to injury, fired a solid 4-over 76 in her opening round. She had three birdies on the day, including two in her first three holes and one to finish out a 1-over 37 on her back nine.
'Jill played really well today,' added Lakowske. 'But for the most part, our team not having been at the Pac-10 championship level is what hurt us today.'
Second-ranked UCLA holds a slim one-stroke lead over rival USC at 2-over 290. Arizona State and Washington are tied for third, eight strokes behind the Bruins.
The Bruins' Susie Mathews carded the low round on the day with a 4-under 68, including five birdies and just one bogey. One stroke behind Mathews is top-ranked Louise Stahle of Arizona State.
'We've talked about adjusting to the course,' Lakowske said about continuing Tuesday.
'They just need to improve every day and not worry so much about their play, but just about getting better.'
The second round begins Tuesday at 8 a.m.
