Members of the ninth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team will be in Ojai, Calif. this week competing at the Pac-10 Championships as part of the 105th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament, April 21-24. The Pac-10s are an individual event, featuring two 32-player singles draws (Pac-10 Main and Pac-10 Invite), as well as two 16-player doubles draws (Main and Invite). Competing in this year's main singles draw are: Laura Gordon, Alex McGoodwin and Tracy Lin. The invite draw will feature Elizabeth Lumpkin, Anya Loncaric and Amber Ray. Gordon and McGoodwin will be in the main doubles draw, and Lumpkin and Lin will be competing together in the invite. Updated draws can be accessed at the official tournament website
Four UCLA players have won Pac-10 singles titles in Ojai, with the most recent being Sara Walker in 2000. Prior to that, Jane Thomas (1987), Keri Phebus (1995) and Annica Cooper (1998) all won titles. In doubles, Mariko Fritz-Krockow and Sara Walker won the championship in 2001, joining three other UCLA teams to have won it, including: Mamie Ceniza/Stella Sampras (1989), Kim Po/Sampras (1991) and Phebus/Paige Yaroshuk (1996).
The Bruins began last week by posting a 6-1 victory over Pepperdine in Malibu. The only point posted by the Waves came at the No. 4 position, where Bruin senior Sarah Gregg was forced to retire due to injury. UCLA kept that momentum heading into a rivalry match with fourth-ranked USC on Saturday, avenging a 4-3 loss to the Women of Troy earlier in the year by winning 5-2 . The Bruins won the doubles point and then had singles victories from Daniela Bercek, Alex McGoodwin, Laura Gordon and Elizabeth Lumpkin. Although the match did not count in the Pac-10 standings, the Bruins gained valuable points in the season-long race for the Lexus Gauntlet Trophy. The Bruins' victory gave UCLA a 50-40 advantage in the all-sport competition.
With her straight-set victory over No. 10 Nicole Leimbach of USC last Saturday, Daniela Bercek defeated her third top-10 opponent in the last two weeks. Bercek, who has jumped to No. 13 in the ITA Singles Rankings because of her recent victories, was coming off wins over No. 4 Suzi Babos (Cal) and No. 9 Amber Liu (Stanford). Liu is the two-time defending NCAA Singles Champion.
UCLA moved up one spot to No. 9 in this week's ITA National Team Rankings released on Tuesday. Individual rankings were also released and the Bruins feature two top-25 singles players in No. 13 Daniela Bercek and No. 24 Riza Zalameda. Laura Gordon is also ranked, checking in at No. 83. In doubles, Bercek and Zalameda are ranked No. 4. New team and individual rankings will be released again next Tuesday.
Due to its top-10 ranking, UCLA will likely host NCAA Regional action, May 13-14 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins will find out if they are hosting when the 64-team NCAA Tournament Draw is released on May 4. UCLA earned a No. 9 seed in 2004, making it all the way to the NCAA Final, losing to top-seeded Stanford, 4-1.
Stella Sampras Webster is in her ninth season as head coach at UCLA, owning an overall record of 146-82 (.640). In her eight seasons in Westwood, the Bruins have finished in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships seven times, including a trip to the finals in 2004. As a player, Sampras Webster was a four-time All-American at UCLA from 1988-91, capturing the NCAA Doubles title (w/Allyson Cooper) as a freshman in 1988.
