Michelle Smith Tabbed Pac-10 Player Of The Week
April 19, 2005
Walnut Creek, Calif. - Stanford freshman third baseman Michelle Smith has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Softball Player of the Week, and UCLA freshman Anjelica Selden has been named Pitcher of the Week for April 12-18, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Smith, from Agoura Hills, Calif., helped the Cardinal to a 3-0 record last weekend on the road against the Oregon schools. On the weekend, Smith hit .555 (5-for-9) with three runs scored and 10 RBI. Stanford handed Oregon State its first Conference loss on April 15 (3-0) in Corvallis. The freshman went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored in the victory. Against Oregon on April 16, Smith was 1-for-2 at the plate with four RBI and a run scored, which included a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning. Smith wrapped up her weekend going 2-for-4 on April 17 with four RBI and a run scored. She also hit her 15th home run of the season in game two against the Ducks, which ties the single-season school record (set by former All-American Jessica Mendoza). Smith has hit a home run in five consecutive games for the Cardinal. She leads the team with 42 RBI and 15 homers on the year. Smith is currently on a five-game hitting streak and leads the team with 15 multi-RBI games this season.
Selden, from Vacaville, Calif., was 3-0 in two starts and a relief appearance last weekend against the Arizona schools. In two complete-game starts, Selden earned a 4-0 victory over No. 22 Arizona State and a 9-1 win over No. 2 Arizona, throwing 14 innings while allowing seven hits, one unearned run, striking out 19 and walking three (one intentionally). She also had a win in relief on April 17 against the Wildcats, pitching three innings and striking out three. For the week, she had a 1.31 ERA, went 3-0 in 16 innings work and allowed only four runs, three earned. Against the Sun Devils on April 15, Selden pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out nine without issuing a walk. The lone hit was surrendered the final batter of the third inning, and the Sun Devils had just two baserunners on the day (one reached via error) while Selden threw just 83 pitches. It was her ninth solo shutout of the season. On April 16 against the Wildcats, Selden gave up an unearned run in the top of the third inning after working out of a no-outs bases-loaded jam in the second inning. After that unearned run crossed the plate, Selden allowed just three Wildcat base runners for the remainder of the game, and struck out four of the last five batters she faced, including recording all three outs via strikeout in the sixth inning. She struck out 10 batters in the game for her 15th double-figure strikeout performance this season.
This is the third weekly honor for both Smith and Selden. The awards are the 30th and 87th all-time honors for the Cardinal and the Bruins, respectively.
