WSU's Welch Cards 66 In Round 2 Of Championships
April 19, 2005
PLEASANTON, Calif. - Washington State's Kim Welch carded a 6-under 66 in Round Two to take the individual lead of the 2005 Pac-10 Women's Golf Championships on Tuesday at the Ruby Hill Golf Course. Second-ranked UCLA still leads the overall team standings, shooting a 2-over 290 to stand at 579 (+3) through two rounds.
Welch has a score of 136 (-8) through two rounds on the par 72, 6,304-yard course. She had seven birdies and just one bogey in Round Two. A two-time All-American senior from Sacramento, Welch is seeking her 12th career title after winning the Peg Bernard Collegiate last week. Her 66 on Tuesday ties WSU's single-round scoring record, which Welch set on April 9 at Stanford.
'I was just rolling putts in,' Welch said. 'I felt good on the green today. I wasn't putting them close, but I was making them. My coach said coming in that it was a bomber's course, and I was very excited about that. The practice round was slow, but now I'm loving it.'
The Bruins hold a seven-stroke lead on USC, which shot a 295 (+7) on Tuesday for a 586 (+10) total score. Arizona State and Arizona are tied for third place with a 589 (+13) followed by Washington State (592, +16), host California (600, +24), Washington (602, +26), Oregon (616, +40), Stanford (619, +43) and Oregon State (639, +63).
While Welch moved up from a third-place tie to take the individual lead, Arizona junior Cassandra Kirkland moved up from sixth place to sit just behind Welch in a second-place tie with UCLA junior Susie Mathews. Kirkland, who eagled the eighth hole and had four birdies, carded a 5-under 67 on Tuesday to tie Mathews at 139 (-5) through two rounds. Mathews had led after the first round but shot a 1-under 71 to drop down one spot.
Kirkland led the Wildcats to the best team effort of the day. Arizona shot a 1-over 289 to climb three spots from its sixth-place position after Round One. Senior Wildcat Mar Garcia, who shot a 2-under 70 on Tuesday, eagled the 11th hole and had three birdies to move into a fifth-place tie (143, -1) with three other golfers.
UCLA had the second-best Tuesday performance after a slow start. The Bruins' top four golfers combined for four double bogeys and three bogeys to shoot a 151 on the front nine. On the back nine, they had 11 birdies and shot a 139 to finish at 290 for the day. Of the 11 birdies, Mathews had four, senior Charlotte Mayorkas had four, freshman Amie Cochran had two and sophomore Hannah Jun had one.
The Bruins are the only team with three golfers - Mathews, Mayorkas (tied for 5th, 143, -1) and Cochran (tied for 9th, 145, +1) - among the top 10 golfers. Mayorkas, last year's Pac-10 individual champion, rebounded from two early double bogeys to fire seven birdies and shoot a 2-under 70 in Round Two.
'I'm really proud how we played today,' UCLA coach Carrie Forsyth said. 'Again we had a rough start, but I knew they had so many birdies in them. Charlotte, making back-to-back doubles and then mentally coming back, is really something.'
