Cougars Tie Portland and Mexican Women's National Team
April 20, 2005
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Washington State soccer team tied the Portland Pilots 1-1 at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex Saturday and then drew a 0-0 decision with Mexican Women's National Team Sunday at the same field. The Cougars will finish their spring season in Pullman, when they host the annual 7-A-Side Tournament April 23-24 on the WSU campus.
'Anytime you can get a positive result out of playing quality soccer teams like Portland and an international team it's a good weekend,' WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. 'Results apart, the weekend was a great stepping stone in our development as both games provided us with an environment and opponent we had not come across. It reinforced the progress we have made and the work to be done both individually and collectively for the future.'
WSU came from behind in Saturday's game to tie the Pilots 1-1 when freshman Molly Alexander capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity early in the second half. Portland scored with a shot from 15-yards inside the box less than two-minutes into the game. The Cougars posted six shots to the Pilots 12.
The Cougars played the Mexican Women's National Team infront of a crowd of 888 fans that withstood a downpour of rain midway through the second half to watch the conclusion of the 0-0 game. WSU goalkeeper Katie Hultin kept the Cougs in the game, making nine saves as the national team tallied 22 shots to WSU's five.
'To bounce back from an early goal against Portland was very encouraging. ' Potter added. 'Then to tie Mexico less than 24 hours later infront of a wonderful crowd and a challenging setting was an accomplishment considering where we are at in terms of personnel and with the international substitution rules.
'We now look forward to finishing off our spring with our 7-A-Side Tournament, which is always a fun weekend. With over thirty teams from both college and club soccer we are excited at the quality and growth of the tournament,' Potter concluded. 'It will be an entertaining weekend of soccer and a great way to wrap up our year.'
