No. 11 Softball Sweeps Double-Header At Saint Mary's College
April 20, 2005
MORAGA, Calif. - No. 10 ranked Oregon State pounded 24 hits en route to a double-header sweep of Saint Mary's College in Wednesday's non-conference softball action. The Beavers recorded a 7-1 victory in the first game, before tallying an 8-0 5-inning route in the night-cap.
The victory ups Oregon State's record to 31-8 on the season, giving the Beavers their seventh consecutive 30-win season.
The Gaels took an early 1-0 lead in the opening inning of game-one, when Claudia Williams belted a two-out RBI double to left-center field.
Oregon State struggled to get things going offensively until pounding four hits in the top of the fourth inning, including a two-out two-run home run to right-center field from catcher Lisa Allen. The Beavers took a 3-1 lead in the frame behind Allen's eighth homer of the year.
Beaver hurler Ta'Tyana McElroy (3-2) breezed through the Gael batters, picking up four strikeouts over the first four innings.
OSU tallied four more hits in the top of the fifth and made the score 5-1 when Adrienne Alo came around from first to score on Kelly Petersen's single and Vanessa Iapala followed with her team-leading 11th double of the season.
The Beavers added two more runs in the sixth. Pinch hitter Lisa Hill picked up the first hit of her career with a single through the left side of the infield and eventually scored when Alo roped a double to center field.
Alo, Petersen, and Cambria Miranda each tallied a pair of hits in the opener, while Allen finished with a 3-for-4 clip from the plate.
McElroy finished with a career-high nine strikeouts in her first complete game of the season, and fittingly ended the contest by throwing a change-up past the SMC batter to secure her personal best.
The Beavers started the second game with a bang and made short work of the Gaels. Back-to-back infield singles by Alo and Mia Longfellow set-up Petersen's fourth home run of the season with a three-run shot over the left field fence.
All of the OSU batters got in on the action, pounding four more hits in the third and pushing the lead to 5-0.
The Beavers poured on three more runs in the top of the fourth, helped in part by Alo's team-leading 12th home run of the season and Iapala's second RBI double of the day.
Beaver ace Brianne McGowan (26-4) tossed a one-hitter and struck out the side in the final inning, en route to her 22nd complete game of the season. Her 26 victories rank in a tie for 4th place on the OSU single season charts, while her seven strikeouts raised her season total to 218 K's - tied for the 3rd highest single season total in school history.
Longfellow finished the second game with a perfect 3-for-3 mark from the plate, while Alo, Iapala, and Allen chipped in two hits each.
The Beavers return to action on Thursday with a non-conference double-header at San Jose State University. First-pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
