Three Cardinal Wrestlers Crowns University All-American

Stanford, Calif. - Three Cardinal wrestlers returned home from the University National Championships in Evanston, Ill., last week with All-America honors, as senior Matt Gentry earned second place and freshman Scott Loescher posted an eighth-place finish at 74 kg (163 lbs) and sophomore Tanner Gardner earned fourth place at 55 kg (121 lbs).
The Cardinal had 11 entrants at the University National Championships held on the campus of Northwestern University, with five competing at 74 kg. Gentry topped the field with a second-place finish and a 6-1 record, while Loescher notched five wins and wrestled his last three matches with a wrist injury. Junior Ray Blake was knocked out of the main draw in the first round, but came back strong and posted six wins in the consolation bracket. Freshman Bobby Pease and sophomore Brian Perry also competed, with Pease picking up a pair of wins in the consolation bracket.
Stanford had only one entrant at 55 kg, as Gardner posted four wins en route to a fourth-place.
At 84 kg (185 lbs), freshman Luke Feist picked up a pair of wins and junior Ryan Hagen scored one victory, while freshman Ian Bork, sophomore Jared Boyer and freshman Phillip Doerner each posted one win apiece (Bork and Boyer at 96 kg (211.5 lbs) and Doerner at 120 kg (264.5 lbs)).
