No. 11 Softball Sweeps Double-Header At San Jose State
April 21, 2005
San Jose, Calif. - The No. 10 ranked Oregon State softball team continued its winning ways on Thursday afternoon with a double-header sweep of San Jose State University. The Beavers recorded a 3-1 victory in the opener before closing the day with a 3-0 decision.
San Jose State (28-22) took an early lead in game one, making the score 1-0 on wild pitch in the first inning.
The Beavers (33-8) responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Vanessa Iapala started things off when she roped a double to the left-center field fence and eventually scored on Brianne McGowan's single through the left-side. OSU grabbed the lead when Cambria Miranda tagged up to cross the plate on Sherina Galvan's sacrifice fly.
OSU added to its lead in the top of the sixth behind back-to-back doubles from senior Kelly Petersen and Iapala. Iapala's two-baser was her team-leading 14th of the season and marked the 41st of her career - just three shy of the all-time Oregon State record of 44, held by Clare Burnum (2001-03).
Maggie DeWall, Petersen, and Iapala each went 2-for-3 from the plate in the opener.
McGowan continued her dominance in the circle, cruising to her 27th win of the season - just one victory shy of matching the Oregon State single season record of 28. The Reno, NV, native registered her 23rd complete game and her four strikeouts raised her single season total to 222 - the third highest total in school history.
A fourth inning two-out, 2-RBI double to the right-center field fence by McGowan proved to be the difference in the second game.
Beaver starting pitcher Amy Klever (3-2) scattered six hits over 4.1 innings of shutout action before McGowan entered the game in relief during the fifth.
Petersen hammered her fifth home run of the season and the 24th of her career with a shot over the left field fence to make the score 3-0 in the top of the sixth.
Sophomore pitcher Ta'Tyana McElroy picked up her second save of the season after striking out two over the final two innings.
Allen led the Beavers from the plate with a 2-for-3 clip.
Oregon State returns to Pacific-10 Conference action on Saturday when the Beavers travel to Eugene for a 1 p.m. Civil War showdown with No. 25 ranked University of Oregon.
