Biro Advances to Quarterfinals at Pac-10 Championships

OJAI, Calif. - Arizona State University's Christopher Biro advanced to quarterfinal action Thursday at the 2005 Pac-10 Individual Pac-10 Tennis Championships. Andy Colombo, Jonathan Kinsella and Clinton Letcher were in action in the main draw as well, while Mike Beatty and Ryan McBride saw action in the invitational draw Thursday.

Biro opened up competition with a first-round match with Washington's Chris Palmanshofer. Biro took Palmanshofer in three sets, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-4, to advance to the second round. In the round of the 16, Biro battled against No. 12 Jamil Al-Agba of USC. Biro came back after losing the first set to upset Al-Agba, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to Friday's quarterfinal match against Oregon's Sven Swinnen.

ASU's Colombo took on Daniel Andrus of the University of Arizona in first-round action, defeating Andrus, 7-5, 6-2, to advance to the second round. Colombo fell to Kaes Van't Hof of USC in the round of 32, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (9). Also in action in the main draw, Letcher took California's Daniel Sebescen to three sets before falling, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, while Kinsella dropped his match against UCLA's Alberto, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, to end their singles competition.

In the invitational draw, Beatty defeated California's Walt Livingston, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, to advance to the second round. Beatty's won his second match by default when his opponent withdrew due to injury. McBride hit the courts in first-round action against Aaron Badorf of USC, defeating the Trojan in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, to advance to the second round. McBride then fell to Arizona's Claudio Christen in a three-set match, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6.

Singles play will continue tomorrow at 12 noon. The first round of Pac-10 doubles matches for the men will start at 9 a.m. at Libbey Park.
