Cal Baseball Loses to No. 25 USC, 7-4
April 22, 2005
BERKELEY, CA - In a game that had an hour and 28 minute rain delay, USC scored three runs with two outs in the top of sixth, and that proved to be the difference as the No. 25-ranked Trojans defeated California, 7-4, Friday at Evans Diamond. Cal falls to 25-17 overall and 6-7 in the Pac-10, and USC improves to 25-11 and 7-3 in conference play.
The Trojans were led by the pitching of sophomore right-hander Ian Kennedy, who improved his record to 7-1, throwing 7.0 innings with nine hits, three runs, two earned runs, no walks and seven strikeouts. The Bears' nine hits off of Kennedy were the most he has given-up in a game this season, but Cal wasn't able to stop USC in the sixth. With the scored tied, 3-3, Bear starter Adam Gold (5-5, 5.7 innings, nine hits, six runs, four earned runs, no walks, four strikeouts) ran into trouble. Gold had two outs when he gave up a single up the middle to Baron Frost, a two-run homer to Darin Vieira, a solo home run by Hector Estrella and a double to Dale Legaspi, knocking him out of the game.
USC scored first in the contest on a RBI single by Vieira in the top of the second. Cal countered with a run in the bottom of the second on a RBI single by junior left fielder Allen Craig. The Trojans then had a RBI single from third baseman Billy Hart in the third, but the Bears came back again to take a 3-2 lead in the fourth on a throwing error by Hart and another RBI single by Craig. USC tied the game at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly by Blake Sharp in the fifth.
Each team added a run for the final 7-4 margin after the rain delay prior to the eighth inning. The Trojans scored on a throwing error by Cal second baseman Josh Satin in the eighth, while Satin had a fielder's choice RBI in the bottom of the eighth. The Bears left two runners on in the eighth and three runs on in the bottom of the ninth.
Craig paced Cal at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBI, and Satin was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Vieira was 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI for USC.
Cal will next host USC in the second game of the three-game Pac-10 series, Saturday, Apr. 23 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
USC: Vieira, two-run homer in the sixth. Estrella, solo home run in the sixth.
