Four Cardinal Players Advance to Pac-10 Quarterfinals

April 21, 2005

Ojai, Calif. - Seven Stanford singles players competed at the Pac-10 Championships today, with all-four Cardinal entrants in the main draw advancing to the quarterfinals tomorrow.

With eight players still competing in the championship singles draw, four of them will still be wearing cardinal and white, as Alice Barnes, Whitney Deason, Theresa Logar and Anne Yelsey all went 2-0 today en route to the quarterfinals. Barnes, ranked No. 22 in the nation, dropped only two games today as she defeated Arizona State's Kady Pooler, 6-1, 6-0 and then beat Arizona's Kelly Perry, 6-0, 6-1. No. 46 Deason won her first match in two sets, but dropped her opening set against Washington State's Ekaterina Burduli. Deason posted two-straight 6-4 sets to save the match and record her 31st victory of the season. No. 49 Logar posted three-consecutive 6-2 sets, to down her first opponent and then take the lead over UCLA's Tracy Lin. Logar finished the day with a 7-5 second-set victory to advance to the third round of competition. Yelsey started the day with a 3-6 loss in her first set, but rebounded quickly to earn a first round win over Arizona's Maja Mlakar with 6-3, 6-0 sets. In the Round of 16, Yelsey posted a 7-6, 6-3 win over Oregon's Daria Panova to complete the Cardinal sweep.

On Friday, Barnes will face Lindsey Nelson (USC), Deason will challenge Nicole Leimbach (USC), Logar will take on Dianne Hollands (Arizona), and Yelsey will face USC's Anca Anastasiu, who upset sixth-ranked Suzi Babos (Cal) in the first round this afternoon.

This season, Barnes is 0-2 against Nelson, dropping a three-set match in the quarterfinals of the Pac-10 Indoors and a two-set loss in the Cardinal-Trojan dual on April 8. Deason, Logar and Yelsey have not faced their opponents yet this season.

In the Invitational, senior Kara Guzman won her first match in three sets, but dropped her second match of the day to fall in the Round of 16. Junior Jessica Leck also won her first match today, but fell in the second round, while fellow junior Joanna Kao dropped her opening match of the day.

Singles action will continue tomorrow and doubles play will begin in both the championship and invitational draws.
