Hadzic and Sumantri Reach Semis At Pac-10 Championships
April 22, 2005
OJAI, Calif. - Responding from a disappointing first day at the Pac-10 Championships, Washington's women's tennis players turned in a fine performance today in doubles play. The Huskies top doubles team, senior Dea Sumantri and junior Dinka Hadzic, won both of their matches today to advance to the semifinals of the main doubles draw.
Doubles play has been a thorn in the side of the women for the past two seasons. Washington is only 7-13 in the doubles point in dual matches this year. However, after earning only one win in singles play on Thursday, the Huskies combined to go 5-3 today in doubles action.
Hadzic and Sumantri led the way with their pair of wins. In the first round, they defeated UCLA's Laura Gordon and Alex McGoodwin by an 8-3 score. Later in the day, Hadzic and Sumantri netted one of their best wins of the year, upsetting the 24th-ranked Arizona State team of Lauren Colalillo and Kady Pooler, 8-6. In Saturday's semifinal, the Husky pair will face Stanford's Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey at 3:30 p.m.
The two doubles wins on the day gives Sumantri 85 for her career, moving her into second place on the UW career doubles wins list. She passes current Husky Assistant Coach Darija Klaic, and trails the 93 wins of former Husky Claire Carter. Carter and Sumantri teamed up last year to reach the NCAA Quarterfinals and earn All-American status.
Also advancing to the main draw quarterfinals were senior Mugette Ahn and sophomore Saskia Nauenberg. The two advanced past Stanford's Whitney Deason and Theresa Logar in the first round when Deason was forced to retire with an injury. Ahn and Nauenberg were trailing 5-6 at the time. In the quarters, the two ran into one of the nation's top teams, Arizona's 14th-ranked Dianne Hollands and Maja Mlakar, and the Wildcats prevailed, 8-3.
In the Pac-10 Invitational doubles draw, but Washington entrants won their first match but were ousted in the quarterfinals. In the first round, sophomore Monika Kolbovic teamed with freshman Tara Simpson to pick up an 8-3 win over Cal's Brooke Borisoff and Monica Wiesener. They then lost in the quarters, 8-5, to UCLA's Tracy Lin and Elizabeth Lumpkin. Junior Stephanie Svanfeldt and freshman Allison Rainey scored an 8-4 win over Stanford's Kara Guzman and Joanna Kao in round one, but just lost their next match to Oregon's Ester Bak and Davina Mendiburu, 9-8.
