Huskies Fall Short In Late Inning Rally

WESTWOOD, Calif.-- UCLA used a two-out grand slam by Jodie Legaspi in the fifth inning to defeat Washington 4-2 this afternoon at Easton Stadium. The loss dips the Huskies to 21-15 overall and 3-6 in the Pac-10, while the Bruins improve to 24-10 overall and 5-4 in conference play.
Junior Sarah Hyatt led off the second frame with a solo home run over the right field fence to give Washington the 2-0 lead. The blast marked Hyatt's 12th home run of the season.
The Bruins threatened in the bottom of the second inning, loading the bases with two walks and a single by Krista Colburn. Freshman hurler Caitlin Noble notched a strikeout to get out of the inning unscathed.
UCLA took the lead in the fifth inning with a grand slam by Legaspi. Ashley Herrera led off with a double to right centerfield and the Huskies intentionally walked Benyi. The Bruins loaded the bases with a fielder's choice and error. With two outs, Legaspi took the 1-1 pitch over the left centerfield fence to give UCLA the 4-2 lead and eventual victory. It was her sixth home run of the season.
The Huskies put two runners on in the sixth inning with a walk to Noble and single by Lauren Greer but Bruin ace Angelica Seldon notched her eighth strikeout of the game to end the inning.
Washington attempted a seventh inning come back with a two-out home run by Kristen Rivera but Seldon got the next batter to ground out to the shortstop to seal the Bruin victory.
Washington stranded seven runners on base, while UCLA marooned six.
Seldon (16-6) earned the win as she allowed three runs on three hits, while striking out 10.
Noble (9-7) took the loss as she gave up four runs, all unearned, on four hits while striking out four. Ashley Boek pitched 1.1 innings of relief, giving up one hit and striking out one.
Greer, Fiske and Rivera each had two hits for Washington.
The Huskies and Bruins finish the weekend series tomorrow at 2 pm. The game will be broadcast on the radio and can be heard at www.uclabruins.com.
