Legaspi Grand Slam Powers Bruins Past Huskies
April 22, 2005
LOS ANGELES - The 10th-ranked UCLA softball team used a fifth-inning grand slam home run from Jodie Legaspi and the 16th double-figure strikeout game of the season from Anjelica Selden to record its fifth straight Pac-10 win on Friday afternoon, defeating Washington by a score of 4-3. With the win, the Bruins improve to 24-10 (5-4 Pac-10), while the Huskies fall to 21-16 (3-6 Pac-10).
Washington struck first, using a two-out double by Kathy Fiske to take a 1-0 lead, scoring Dominique Lastrapes from first base after Lastrapes drew a one-out walk in the inning. A second run was plated in the second inning on a lead-off home run by Sarah Hyatt, her 12th home run of the season, to give Washington a 2-0 advantage.
UCLA opened the fifth inning with a lead-off double to right center from Ashley Herrera, followed by an intentional walk issued to Caitlin Benyi. Andrea Duran grounded into a fielders choice as the ball went to UW's Callie Bergan at first base, but Bergan's throw hit Benyi in the back for an error, loading the bases with one out. After another fielders choice play, this time with an out being recorded at the plate, Legaspi stepped in and put a 1-0 pitch well over the fence in left center for a grand slam home run, giving the Bruins a 4-2 lead after five innings of play.
Selden allowed another home run in the seventh, a two-out shot over the scoreboard in left field by Kristen Rivera, to bring Washington within a run at 4-3. Selden got Kathy Fiske to ground out, ending the inning and the game.
Selden pitched seven innings to earn her 16th victory of the season. She struck out 10 batters, her 16th double-figure strikeout game of the season.
The Bruins and Huskies return to the field at Easton Stadium on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm.
