No. 2 California defeated No. 3 Washington
April 23, 2005
SEATTLE, WA - The Bears won the Schoch Cup, winning two of the three races in the dual race against Washington. Cal's varsity eight and freshman eight won their races, while the second varsity eight lost to Washington.
In the men's varsity eight race, Cal jumped out to an early two second lead, but failed to increase the lead, finishing three seconds ahead of the Huskies.
The second varsity eight lost to the Huskies in a close race. The two crews were neck and neck until the 1000 meter mark where Washington separated from Cal, finishing the race with a three second lead over the Bears.
The Bear's freshman eight won in a fast race, supported by strong tail winds. Cal took a small lead after 500 meters, and slowly built up to a 12 second victory
'When you have [good athletes], then you have a real rivalry and there's not going to be a one-way street,' said head coach Steve Gladstone. 'Also keep in mind that we have the Pac-10 Championships coming up. Two years ago we won the dual race and got whacked by Washington at the Pac-10s. It's important to keep each one of these contests in perspective. The Cal oarsmen are very, very happy today. They raced what I thought was a very courageous race. The Washington oarsmen did the same. That rivalry will be renewed in three weeks at Lake Natoma.'
Cal will face off against Stanford Saturday, April 30 at 9 am at Redwood Shores.
