No. 7 Cardinal Defeat No. 2 California 2-1 In Berkeley

Berkeley, Calif. - The No. 2 Stanford softball team defeated No. 2 California, 2-1, this afternoon in a seven-inning thriller at Levine-Fricke Field in Berkeley. The Cardinal improve to 34-8 overall, 8-2 in the Pac-10 while the Golden Bears drop to 39-8, 6-5 in league play.
Catalina Morris led off the third inning with a bunt single to get Stanford started. With one out, Michelle Smith doubled to right centerfield, moving Morris to third. Shoney Hixson then pinch ran for Smith. A ground out by Leah Nelson brought Morris home. Jackie Rinehart then singled to right to score Hixson, giving the Cardinal the 2-0 lead.
Cal got a run back in the fifth inning when Vicky Galindo hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Julie Meyer.
The Golden Bears threatened again in seventh. With two outs and a Cal runner on second, Galindo hit a single to centerfield. Catalina Morris threw out the runner at home to end the game and give Stanford the 2-1 victory.
Junior hurler Laura Severson (14-4) picked up the win in the circle for the Cardinal, scattering six hits over seven innings while allowing only one run. California's Kelly Anderson (21-4) took the loss, giving up two runs on seven hits over seven innings of work.
The two teams wrap up the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Berkeley.
