OSU Opens Baseball Series With Win, 5-4

April 22, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Andy Jenkins singled home Tyler Graham with the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning as No. 16 Oregon State beat Washington State 5-4 in Pacific-10 baseball Friday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Jenkins finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in for the Beavers (28-7 overall, 7-3 Pac-10) in front of a season-high home crowd of 1,758.

OSU and Washington State (18-21, 0-10) resume their weekend series on Saturday at 1 p.m. and wrap it up Sunday at 1 p.m. at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Both games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com.

On Friday, Oregon State rallied from a 3-0 deficit after the first inning to get a win that kept the Beavers tied for second in the conference standings.

'This is a huge win for us, probably one of the biggest of the year, just knowing what could happen if we had lost,' Jenkins said.

The senior first baseman put it in the win column for OSU when he punched a two-ball, two-strike pitch from WSU righthander Dane Renkert down the rightfield line to bring Graham home from third base. Graham had beat out a grounder in the hole between shortstop and third base for out a one-an infield single, stole second base and advanced to third on Darwin Barney's flyout to deep right-centerfield.

All three of Jenkins' hits came with two strikes against him, and two of the hits were two-out, run-scoring singles.

'I saw the ball well today,' said Jenkins, who had his 14th multi-hit game of the season and upped his batting average to .375. 'This year I've really made adjustments with my two-strike approach, just making sure I'm not punching out and I'm putting pressure on the defense.'

Kevin Gunderson was credited with the pitching win for OSU for a perfect ninth inning against the top of the Cougar order. Beaver starter Dallas Buck got no decision for his eight innings of work; he allowed four hits (three of them infield singles) and two walks while striking out six.

A delay due to an injured umpire helped Buck and the Beavers get out of a jam in the top of the seventh inning. An infield single, a walk and a pair of errors gave the Cougars the tying run and had the bases loaded with one out when WSU's Jim Murphy fouled a pitch off the left hand of home plate umpire Bill Speck.

Speck had to leave the game and was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, and there was a 29-minute delay while Tony Norris donned the gear to finish the game behind the plate. When play resumed, Buck struck out Murphy and Zach Kosturos to keep the game tied at 4-4.

'Dallas got us big momentum with those two strikeouts,' Jenkins said. 'The delay kind of gave us a chance to dig deep and focus up.'

The Cougars had taken a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on three of its hits, a walk and a hit batter. OSU got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the second inning with one scoring on an error and the other driven in by Casey Priseman's infield single. The Beavers then tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of the third when Jacoby Ellsbury scored on Darwin Barney's single, and OSU went in front 4-3 when Jenkins singled home Graham from second in the bottom of the fifth.

Graham was 2-for-4 for OSU and is now 13-for-13 on stolen bases this season. Ellsbury pushed his hitting streak to a career-best 17 games with a third-inning single and stole his 18th base of the season, but Shea McFeely's hitting streak ended at 10 games for the Beavers.

The evening's ceremonial first pitch was thrown by Brandon Hern. Hern wrestled for OSU during the 2002-03 season, then was called to active duty with the Oregon National Guard and his 18 months of service included a year in Iraq. Since returning to the United States last month, he has resumed attending classes at OSU.
