April 24, 2005
BERKELEY, Calif. - Eric Dworkis threw a complete-game four hitter Sunday as the California Golden Bears shut out the No. 25/22 USC Trojans, 9-0, in Pac-10 Conference action at Evans Diamond. Dworkis threw his second complete game of the season, striking out 11 batters while allowing only one walk.
Cal (26-18, 7-8) salvaged the series after USC (26-12, 8-4) took the first two games. The Trojans have won 12 of their last 16 games and are two games back of first-place Arizona, which USC will face next weekend in Tucson.
The Golden Bears used an 18-hit attack for the victory. Cal scored three runs on six consecutive singles in the third and used a three-run homer from right fielder Chris Errecart in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead before scoring runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings.
Allen Craig went 4-for-4, including a walk, while Errecart went 3-for-5 on the day.
Dworkis improved to 4-5 on the season while USC starter Zack Kalter (2-3) lasted just 2 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
It was the first time that Cal has shut out USC since the 1992 season when the Golden Bears won 11-0 at Evans Diamond.
Freshman first baseman Matt Cusick went 2-for-4 for the Trojans.
