Spring Practice Winding Down
April 25, 2005
Corvallis, Ore. - The Oregon State University football program entered its final week of spring practice Monday. The team drilled at the Tommy Prothro Football Complex, between the Merritt Truax Indoor Center and Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers will hold their final spring practice of the session Wednesday. The annual spring game will be held at PGE Park Sat., April 30 at 1 p.m. Tickets are available through all local Ticketmaster locations, and at PGE Park and Gill Coliseum during business hours. OSU officials recommend fans purchase tickets in advance as a large walkup crowd is expected.
The annual spring game will look similar to the last two scrimmages in terms of a format. The team does not have enough players at certain positions, particularly at offensive line, to play a true game that has been conducted in recent years.
The following are comments from Beaver head coach Mike Riley following Monday's practice.
Q. Comment on the players who were drafted and signed free agent contracts over the last couple of days.
A. 'I'm excited about the opportunities for all of our guys. I think we might end up with seven individuals having a chance of playing in the NFL and I'm anxious to see how they do.'
Q. What do you think about where they were actually picked?
A. 'I've given up on trying to figure out where they draft players. I'm just glad they get an opportunity.'
Q. There was talk that people advised Brandon Browner to stay in school and wait another year. Are you surprised at how it unfolded for him?
A. 'Well, I'm glad how it ended up eventually for Brandon, it sounds like he is going to get a good contract with Denver. Once those decisions (to declare for the Draft) are made all you can do is wish them the best. I will say this, there needs to be a lot of thought put into that process. The NFL actually can provide a lot of information if you search it out. Maybe through the advice of a players' coaches, maybe his parents and the NFL, you can make a good decision . I would suggest that anyone thinking about leaving early for the NFL to take the time and do it the right way.'
Q. You have four quarterbacks taking a lot of reps right now, is that a good thing or a concern?
A. 'We have mixed up the turns quite a bit. We gave a bulk of the turns today to Matt Moore and Sean Canfield, while last week we gave a bulk of the turns to Ryan Gunderson and Sean. We have mixed Brian Hildebrand intermittently in as well. I'm not worried about naming a starter until fall.'
Q. What kind of a spring game can we expect?
A. I'm thinking we might be able to run about 75 plays, we can't have a complete game. We don't have enough players to have two full teams. We will develop some kind of system that will involve the offense against defense. It won't be a typical game where we draft teams.'
Note: Several units of FieldTurf have been delivered to Reser Stadium. Installation is expected to begin shortly.
