UW Golfers Rally in Second Round to Stand 8th at Pac-10s
April 25, 2005
Walla Walla - After a disappointing opening round of play, the Washington men's golf team put on an impressive display during its afternoon round to finish the first day of play at the Pac-10 Championships in eighth place. The 29th-ranked Huskies shot 371 during the opening round of the five-man scoring event to stand in last place. The UW contingent improved its second round score by 18 strokes for a 36-hole total of 14-over 724.
Four of UW's six golfers shot par or better during the second round. Washington's team score of 2-under 353 was the second best score during the afternoon.
The 72-hole tournament, being played at the Walla Walla Country Club, runs through Wednesday.
UCLA grabbed the tournament's early lead by posting rounds of 352 and 355 to hold a two-stroke lead at 3-under 707. Arizona State is second at 709.
Washington was led by the steady play of sophomore Erik Olson. He shot 1-under 70 in the morning and then 2-under 69 in the afternoon to tie for fifth at 3-under 139. Olson trails Arizona State's Pat Moore by five strokes. Moore posted back-to-back rounds of 4-under 67 and leads the field by three shots.
Olson has struggled of late for the Huskies, finishing last on the team in his last two outings. He has not shot under par during a tournament since finishing the Waikoloa Intercollegiate at 6-under 210 in February. Last year Olson was 28th at the Pac-10s with a 14-over score of 302. The Huskies were fourth at the 2004 event.
Washington's James Lepp and Alex Prugh are tied for 27th at 3-over 145. Lepp shot 74 and 71 while Prugh started with a 75 and posted a 70 in the afternoon. Sterling Clark is 33rd at 146 while Zach Bixler is 47th at 149 and Joe Panzeri is 55th at 152.
