Cal Baseball Defeats UC Davis, 6-5

BERKELEY, CA - Senior first baseman James Holder hit a lead-off triple in the bottom of the ninth and later scored on a wild pitch to give California a 6-5 victory over UC Davis Tuesday at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved to 27-18 overall, and UC Davis fell to 21-18.
Holder hit the lead-off triple in the ninth off of Aggie reliever Justin Fitzgerald (1-3, 0.7 inning, one hit, one run) to give Cal the come-from-behind win. The Bears had trailed 5-1 at one point, but battled back to put themselves in position to win.
UC Davis scored two runs in the second inning on a RBI double by Kevin James and a throwing error by Cal first baseman Mike Van Winden on a play at the plate. The Aggies added three more runs in the fourth on RBI singles by James, Grant Hirneise and Daniel Descalso.
The Bears had started their comeback when freshman shortstop Kyle Spraker hit a two-out homer in the second inning. Cal added two runs in the fifth on bases loaded walks by freshman second baseman Josh Satin and Holder. The Bears scored twice more in the sixth to tie the game, 5-5, on sophomore center fielder Brennan Boesch's two-run double.
The winning pitcher for Cal was senior left-hander Travis Talbott (4-1), who pitched the top of the ninth with no hits, no runs, one walk and two strikeouts. Senior reliever Matt Swanson also threw well, pitching 3.0 innings with two hits, no runs, one walk and three strikeouts. Junior left fielder Allen Craig (2-for-3), sophomore catcher Garrett Bussiere (2-for-4) and Spraker (2-for-3, home run) had two hits apiece for the Bears. Hirneise was 3-for-4 with a RBI for UC Davis.
Cal next travels to UCLA for a three-game Pac-10 series, beginning Friday, Apr. 29 at 7 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles.
