Cal Faces Stanford In Annual Big Row
April 27, 2005
This Week: The No. 2 Golden Bears face longtime rival No. 5 Stanford this Saturday at 5:30 pm. The Cardinal will be looking to snap a fourteen year drought of Big Row victories. The varsity eight, second varsity eight and freshman eight all won their races against Stanford last season.
History of The Big Row: The Big Row dates back to 1902, and since that first race, the Bears have won 54 of the 72 races. Each year the two teams take to the water to bring home the Schwabacher Cup, crew's version of football's Axe. The Cup has not made its way to Stanford since the Big Row of 1990.

Washington Dual Recap: Cal defeated No. 3 Washington, winning two out of three races last weekend in Seattle, Wash. The Bears' varsity eight and freshman eight both finished first, while the second varsity eight fell to Washington by three seconds.
Looking Ahead: After the Big Row, the Bears will begin preparation for the Pac-10 championships held in Rancho Cordova on May 14. Last year, the Bears varsity eight and second varsity eight finished second to Washington, while Cal's freshman eight was the lone champion on the day for the Bears. Cal will be looking for its first Pac-10 title in three years.
